Frank Walker Warns of AI Peril
By all accounts, the 60th Anniversary Celebration of the Orange County Historical Society as a raving success. As many as 150 people showed up to witness the presentation of the Frank S. Walker Jr. Historic Preservation Award and to honor its first recipient, Frank Walker himself.
During his acceptance talk, Walker told a humorous story about Elijah Craig, a separatist
Baptist preacher in Orange County who later moved to Kentucky and produced bourbon
whiskey. “That’s what makes history fun,” said Walker, adding that you can buy Elijah Craig bourbon today at the ABC store.
Walker then moved on to a more serious matter. “We are probably the last generation of
people who will be able to do independent thinking. Artificial intelligence is very quickly becoming ‘Intrusive Intelligence,’” he warned.
Other highlights of the day included a keynote address by Montpelier’s Chief Project Officer,
Dr. Katie Crawford-Lackey. As a public historian, she focused her remarks on “using history as a tool for civic engagement and democratic participation.”
