2025 ROOF CAMPAIGN
Hello Members and Friends,
A roof for a new era… The Orange County Historical Society recently celebrated its 60th anniversary and our contributions to the community; but, as with all organizations, progress involves a mix of smooth operation, work, and occasional challenges. On a windy weekend in late March, the roof over our Sandra and William H. Speiden auditorium was damaged by wind, causing significant and persistent leaks in the auditorium threatening our recent remodeling and audiovisual equipment used to live stream and record our programs.

Both the roof and gutter were repaired in 2024, but all three roofing contractors bidding on current repairs thought roof replacement was the appropriate way forward for a permanent solution. As it has proved problematic, the existing built-in gutter will also be replaced with a conventional gutter during this repair project.

Given the urgency of the situation the Board of Directors has considered several alternatives and selected a local roofing contractor’s bid and approved “borrowing” $64,000 from the Society’s endowment.
This amount will replace the auditorium roof, make essential carpentry modifications for and install a new gutter, and repaint the exterior wall where the repair work will focus.
Keeping the facility secure and dry is our top priority, but close behind is “repaying” our endowment which produces integral funding for day-to-day operations (e.g., part-time staff, utilities, etc.). Reducing this income source will only hurt an already lean operation.

Please consider generously supporting this fundraising effort to fund the Historical Society’s roof repairs and help us to continue our commitment to “discovery, preservation, and dissemination of the history of Orange County, Virginia” for our next 60 years! Your donation is greatly appreciated and can be paid via credit card directly on this website.
Thank you,
Ray Ezell
President, Orange County Historical Society
